Singaporean Suspected for Human Smuggling

Snapshot by iNewsTodayTwo Singaporean men suspected of human smuggling were arrested on Saturday night after they dropped off a Chinese national at Punggol Jetty.

Chua Kim Hai, 56, and Cheng Andrew, 40, were spotted in their red sampan pulling up next to another vessel at the north-western tip of Pulau Ubin at about 9pm that night. Using night-vision surveillance equipment, the Police Coast Guard (PCG) spotted the woman moving from the other boat into the red vessel, which then sped towards Malaysia. Chua’s and Cheng’s boat headed for the Singapore shoreline.

A PCG vessel went after the modified sampan, which pulled up at the beach next to the Punggol Jetty. Chinese national Lu Yun Lan, 37, alighted and ran into the bushes to hide. She was nabbed by police officers about 15 minutes later, without valid travel documents.

Meanwhile, Chua and Cheng attempted to speed away in the sampan, but were arrested by PCG officers gave chase. Both men were arrested for attempting to smuggle Lu into Singapore.
