more than 100 lawyers sued

More than 100 unnamed lawyers loyal to BNP were sued on Tuesday for vandalising two windows of Dhaka district and metropolitan sessions judge’s courts earlier in the day. Ruhul Amin, a court official (nazir), of the Dhaka District Judge’s Court, filed the case under Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act with Kotwali Police Station. On Tuesday, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum boycotted all the judge’s and magistrate’s courts of Dhaka in protest against sending BNP lawmaker Mahbub Uddin Khokon to jail in an arson attack case. The leaders and members of the forum, a platform of pro-BNP lawyers, wore black badges as a symbol of protest and also hoisted black flags in the courts. The pro-BNP lawyer brought out a procession on the court premises around 10:15am. After the procession, the demonstrators vandalised two window panes at the district judge’s and metropolitan sessions judge’s court. They, however, took part in the hearing on the remand prayer of BNP central leader Khairul Kabir Khokan, who was later placed on a four-day remand over torching vehicles at Nayapaltan in the capital during April 29 hartal. The forum announced the boycott on Monday after the court denied bail to Khokon, the lawmaker from Noakhali-1 constituency, in the case. It also accepted bus torching charges against 45 opposition leaders and activists including Khokon in the case that filed after a vehicle was torched near the Prime Minister’s Office on April 29.
